Why Do You Need a Specific Turbo Trainer Tyre?

A turbo trainer tyre uses a special rubber compound designed to resist heat build-up and last far longer under indoor use.

When your tyre presses against the trainer's roller, the constant friction generates far more heat than you'd ever experience on the road. Standard road tyres aren't built to cope with this: they overheat quickly and wear out fast. We've seen riders wear through a normal road tyre in just a few weeks of regular turbo use.

The short version: using a standard road tyre on a turbo trainer will cost you more in the long run than simply buying a tyre designed for the job.

Better Power Transfer, Too

Heat resistance isn't the only benefit. Turbo-specific tyres also have a smoother tread, which gives a more consistent connection with the trainer's roller — helping you put your power down more efficiently instead of losing it to slip and vibration.

Because you don't need to worry about grip in corners or wet roads on a trainer, these tyres can do away with tread patterns altogether. That's also why they're usually made in bright colours: it's a visual reminder that they're indoor-only and shouldn't be ridden outside.

Tip: if you're switching between indoor and outdoor riding through the winter, it's worth picking up a cheap spare wheel. Fit your turbo tyre to it permanently and you'll avoid the hassle of swapping tyres and re-inflating every time you switch setups.
