Interview with Muslim Ski Club Founder, Burhan Ali
I had the pleasure of speaking with Burhan Ali, the founder of the Muslim Ski Club—the world's first global ski club for Muslims!
Founded in 2024, the club is on a mission to redefine the slopes and connect Muslim skiers from around the world. Burhan and I sat down to chat about some of the challenges Muslims face when skiing, and to hear all about their recent trip to the Erciyes Ski Resort in Turkey.
What are some barriers for Muslims when it comes to skiing?
Burhan shared a few key challenges that many Muslims encounter:
- Access to halal food – It’s not always easy to find in popular ski destinations.
- Après-ski and drinking culture – This can feel isolating or unwelcoming for those who don't drink alcohol.
- Lack of diversity – There are often very few Muslims on the slopes, which can make people feel like they stand out.
- Prayer facilities – Finding a suitable and private place to pray during ski trips can be difficult.
What’s the Erciyes Ski Resort like?
Burhan had just returned from a trip to Erciyes Ski Resort, and here’s what he had to say:
- Located in the Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality in Turkey on the slopes of Mount Erciyes, a dormant stratovolcano and the highest peak in Central Anatolia, standing at 3,917 meters (12,851 feet).
- Its a newly developed resort (officially established in 2011)
- Sits at an elevation of 4,000m with over 120km of piste to enjoy
- The resort has wide open runs, and a mix of easy and challenging off-piste terrain.
- The terrain is wide open—no trees, so it offers unobstructed views.
- Modern infrastructure, including brand new gondolas and lifts. combining state-of-the-art facilities with the region's rich historical backdrop
What did you like about Erciyes?
- The Turkish hospitality really stood out—halal food was readily available, and there’s even a mosque at the base of the slopes.
- The trip was easily accessible, taking only about 6 hours to get there.
- Very beginner-friendly with lots of nursery slopes—ideal for their recent group where 50% were first-time skiers.
- Excellent value for money: Their 7-night all-inclusive package included ski passes, equipment, group lessons, full-board accommodation, and more!
- There's more than just skiing—guests can take a day trip to Cappadocia, enjoy traditional Turkish baths, and explore local cuisine.
Any downsides?
- The scenery was less picturesque compared to other resorts—no forests or alpine charm.
- Some red runs weren’t very challenging, which might not satisfy more experienced skiers.
