Can You Use a 12-Speed Cassette on a Direct Drive Turbo Trainer?

Most direct drive smart turbo trainers are built as standard for bikes with an 8 to 11-speed cassette. If you're running a 12-speed cassette on a direct drive turbo trainer, the good news is it's usually possible, you just need the right freehub body first.

Below, we've broken down compatibility by trainer brand, so you can check what you'll need before you ride.

How 12-Speed Turbo Trainer Compatibility Works

Direct drive trainers use a freehub body to accept your cassette, in the same way your bike's rear wheel does. Most trainers ship with a standard Shimano/SRAM-compatible body, which handles 12-speed Shimano Hyper Glide (HG) cassettes without any changes.

For SRAM 12-speed cassettes (XD or XDR) and Shimano Micro Spline cassettes (used on MTB groups like XTR and Deore), you'll need to swap in a different freehub body. Here's what fits which trainer.

Tacx Neo 2T

  1. Road bike, 12-speed Shimano Hyper Glide (HG) cassette — fits the standard hub body. SHIMANO body | Garmin

  2. MTB, 12-speed Shimano XTR or Deore cassette with thru axle — needs a Micro Spline hub body. Tacx® Micro Spline Body | Garmin

Wahoo KICKR / KICKR Core

SRAM Eagle 12-Speed MTB Groupsets: A Special Case

SRAM Eagle 12-speed MTB groups don't fit the Saris direct drive lineup (Hammer, H2, H3) or Wahoo KICKRs out of the box. The cassette is too wide to allow the largest cog to be used, and compatibility tops out at 8–11 speed.

The fix is the same as above: fit an XD/XDR hub. XD/XDR hub | turbo parts

Wahoo XD/XDR Hub The KICKR and KICKR Core XD/XDR freehub body enables the use of SRAM's 12-speed XD and XDR cassettes on Wahoo's direct drive turbo trainers.

Shimano Road 12-Speed Groupsets

Road bikes with a 12-speed groupset (a Canyon Speedmax TT bike, for example) do fit the trainer, so in theory you can fit an 11-speed Shimano cassette to the trainer and use it with your bike. The catch: you can't use the biggest two gears (28/30 tooth). In practice, this means using the trainer's resistance settings and keeping the bike in the middle of the cassette.

12-speed compatibility isn't always straightforward yet, but watch this space. We may well see new direct drive trainers launch with native 12-speed support.
